about

Morwell’s 3rd EP: four new breaks / footwork / jungle experiments.

The title track sees Morwell try to more accurately reflect his cultural setting. What if, instead of American R&B and hip hop acapellas, he used material from his own everyday experience. Like, the way he is always listening to BBC Radio fucking 4. In this track, based around an episode of In Our Time, Melvyn Bragg’s guests rhythmically break down a poem by Gerard Manley Hopkins.

I Can’t Remember When It All Started is a hazy union of footwork and dub. Jazz chords and half-heard banter from a Prince jam session entice you in to the fog, but you end up in a strange place, lost and battered by echo.

Close 2 U has a good go at destroying some 80s soul, and your feelings. Someone is trying to fix a glitchy radio that is receiving two stations at once. Claustrophic bass pressure gives way to crunchy euphoria. Towards the end we can almost hear (can we?) snatches of ? what?

You and Me concludes this emotional journey. We are visited by The Scorpions circa 1990. They are trying to tell us something, but struggle to break through a veil of dusty synths and crackly breaks. The bonus remix version takes us to a darker and more intense place. Here, Morwell undoes all his Radio 4 sampling efforts - before anyone can stop him, he adds a fat slice of R&B vocals.
